After a brief career as a secondary education teacher, Christine Bierman founded Colt Safety, Inc in 1980. Colt Safety warehouses & distributes everything a worker wears or uses in a hazardous environment from hard hats, safety glasses/goggles, work gloves, respiratory/chemical suit protection to biological detectors and gas monitors used in homeland security and all industry.
Rapid growth in the early years brought with it numerous small business awards including an "SBA Woman's Business Advocate" award, numerous "Small Business Entrepreneur" awards, U.S. Chamber "Blue Chip Enterprise" and "Fastest Growing Companies".
An advocate and public speaker for Small and Woman Business Enterprises Christine has testified in Congress on behalf of women business owners' access to credit resulting in the passage of HR5050 in 1989. Christine worked with former Congressman Jim Talent (MO) on the SAFE ACT and OSHA reform and was quoted in a letter to Congressmen on Capitol Hill regarding the SAFE ACT. Christine co-founded "The Women's Voice" in 2001 with a mission to gain economic access for WBE's. The company was named by DIV2000 as one of the "Top 50 Diversity Companies" in the State of Missouri.
Christine was the first woman ever elected to the National Board of Directors of Safety Equipment Distributors Association (SEDA). Christine is past chairperson of Brentwood Economic Development Council, past President of the St. Louis Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) and currently serves on the Society's "Body of Knowledge" (BoK) task force. A member of NAWBO since 1984, she has served on NAWBO's board, its Public Policy committee and its International Procurement committee.
A board member of AMC Cancer Research since 1989 Christine co-chaired the 1996 "Women's Event" and along with her daughter Shannel chaired the event again in 2001. She co-chaired the 1997 "St. Louis Walks for Women". All events benefit breast cancer education, awareness and control research. Christine has been selected by the Committee of 200 to be part of their mentor protégé program.
Christine received the "Distinguished Woman Business Owner" award from NAWBO in 1997, the "Woman of Achievement" award from PWA in 1998 and the "Spirit of Excellence" award from AMC 1999. 2001 brought with it "The Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District's Diverse Universe Award" a Working Woman Magazine "Entrepreneurial Excellence" Award and the honor of "Brentwood Business Person of the Year". In 2001 Christine was selected by ASSE St. Louis as the first woman ever to receive the "Safety Professional of the Year" (SPY) award. In Y2000 Christine was invited by the Mayor of the City of St. Louis to speak on "Economic Access" at the Mayors Conference on Racial Justice and Harmony. The St. Louis Business Journal has chosen Christine as one of its "MOST INFLUENTIAL BUSINESS WOMEN".
Advocacy and membership in Women Impacting Public Policy (WIPP), National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO), Women President's Organization (WPO), and Women Business Enterprise Network Council (WBENC) led to Christine being hand chosen by the WHITE HOUSE to introduce President George W. Bush as he kicked off his "Economic Stimulus Package" to a group of Small Business owners and advocates in The Rose Garden on tax day April 15, 2003. In Spring of 2004 Christine received The "NAWBO National Public Policy Advocate of the Year" award in Washington DC.
The United States SBA honored Christine as one of 5 women in the Nation for the 2004 Celebrating Women in Business Award. And for their commitment to our Nations defense while supporting 2 employees activated by Operation Noble Eagle and Operation Iraqi Freedom, the company has been selected for the 2004 DOD ESGR (Employers Support of the Guard and Reserve) FREEDOM award. Colt Safety is the first Missouri Company and the first Woman Business Enterprise ever to win this award. In 2004 Christine was presented with the YWCA Leader Award.
The company selected as "One of St. Louis's Best Places to Work" has a mission to "profitably meet the safety and hygiene needs of the American workforce. Christine's personal mission is to be a positive resource to family, friends and staff. She measures success by "the lives we touch, the lives we change and those we see smile as we journey through life."
